Expressing his disillusionment with the current state of affairs within the party, Okoukoni emphasized that political engagement in Nigeria should not be dictated by such a transactional approach. He underscored the importance of visionary leadership and expressed his commitment to stepping aside until the party can establish a more principled and transformative path forward.
“I wish to inform you of my intention to withdraw from the governorship race in Edo State. My decision to withdraw at this time has to do with the style of the management of our party. Indeed, we still have much to do regarding the approach and decision-making of our great party,” Okoukoni stated in his letter.
This development highlights the internal challenges facing the Labour Party and underscores the need for a reevaluation of its political ethos and practices. As the party grapples with these issues, Okoukoni’s departure serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of integrity and vision in Nigerian politics.
