Labour Union Demand ₦350,000 As New Minimum Wage

At the 5th National Delegate Conference held at the University of Abuja, NAAT’s national president, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, emphasized the distinction between minimum wage and living wage, advocating for the latter to address the rising cost of living.

Nwokoma highlighted the impact of fuel subsidy removal and inflation on workers’ livelihoods, stressing the necessity for Nigeria to align with other African countries in providing dignified wages for workers. He cited examples of countries like Seychelles and South Africa, where monthly wages far surpass those in Nigeria.

In addition to the wage demand, Nwokoma addressed challenges such as delays in circular releases for career progression, emphasizing the need to expedite the release of CONTISS 14 and 15 circulars. He also urged the federal government to implement the lingering FGN/NAAT 2009 Agreement.

Regarding backlog salary payments, Nwokoma expressed concern over the financial stability of members and pledged proactive measures to address the issue, including dialogue with authorities and sustained advocacy.

NAAT’s call for a higher minimum wage reflects broader concerns about workers’ welfare amidst economic hardships, highlighting the urgency for policy reforms to ensure fair compensation and improved living standards.
