According to Ireporter Online, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed the appeal by Southwest governors urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fast-track the creation of State Police across the federation.

In a statement issued in Ogba, Lagos, the party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, noted that the Southwest has consistently championed the push for a modern and community-driven security framework capable of responding swiftly to emerging threats. He commended the governors for demonstrating unity, foresight and an informed understanding of the nation’s security realities, adding that their position reflects the long-standing progressive principle that effective security must be rooted at the local level.

Oladejo stated that President Tinubu has already shown strong political commitment to reforming and strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture. He said the governors’ renewed call further reinforces the President’s dedication to building a responsive, citizen-focused and technologically advanced security system.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current security challenges demand multi-layered policing strategies, noting that a properly structured, professionally regulated and federally coordinated State Police system would enhance community-level security, improve intelligence gathering and help deter crime more effectively.

Citing previous efforts such as the Amotekun Corps and continuous investments in localized security infrastructure, Oladejo argued that the Southwest has already demonstrated the viability of decentralised policing. He described State Police as the natural next step in strengthening national security.

He added that President Tinubu has consistently reiterated his determination to secure every part of the country, pointing to ongoing reforms within the military, police and intelligence agencies as evidence of an administration willing to make bold decisions. Creating State Police, he said, would mark another significant milestone in this process.

Oladejo also criticised attempts by some groups to politicise or distort the conversation for personal gain, describing such actions as insensitive to the seriousness of the nation’s security concerns. He insisted that Nigerians deserve sincere dialogue and workable solutions rather than fear-driven narratives.

Reaffirming the party’s support for the Renewed Hope security reforms and the unified stance of Southwest governors, he emphasised that safeguarding the lives of citizens is non-negotiable. He concluded that the call for State Police is overdue and that the Lagos APC is fully aligned with this patriotic push, urging stakeholders across the country to rally behind President Tinubu in securing a safer and more resilient Nigeria.
