Lagos CP Warns: ‘No More Shielding Police Officers’ – Task Force Could Be Disbanded

According to Ireporter Online, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has stated that no police officer will be shielded if found guilty of misconduct. Speaking at a press briefing in Ikeja on Saturday, Jimoh warned that the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, also known as the Task Force, could be disbanded if allegations of unprofessional conduct continue.

The commissioner highlighted growing concerns over complaints against the unit, including allegations of extortion and involvement in civil disputes. “We are not going to defend any police officers who embark on any wrongdoing. We won’t,” he emphasized.

Jimoh referenced a viral video showing Task Force operatives allegedly arresting lawyers over a land dispute, noting that disciplinary measures had previously been taken and that the command would act decisively if further verified violations occur.

He added that reforms are already in progress, with newly screened officers being deployed to the unit. The command also plans to work with civil society organisations and human rights groups to enhance accountability and professionalism within the force.

“We have read the riot act to them… if verified complaints of wrongdoing arise again, I will not hesitate to dissolve the entire task force and bring in a new set of officers,” Jimoh said. “We are posting new officers after thorough background checks, training, and reorientation, and we will engage human rights organisations and CSOs to broaden their understanding of human rights.”
