Lagos State Launches Digital Skills Training For University Students

The Lagos State Government has launched a comprehensive training programme in digital skills and entrepreneurship for students at Lagos State University, Ojo, and the Lagos State College of Health Technology, Yaba.

According to a statement made available to Ireporter Online by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Mamud Hassan, the initiative, named Job Initiative Lagos, seeks to address youth unemployment and poverty.

Speaking to students at LASU, the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, emphasized the state’s commitment to equipping young people for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy. He highlighted that the programme is an integral part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, aimed at ensuring that no graduate is left behind in a digitally driven world.

Sule noted that the training would provide students with globally competitive skills to position Lagos as a leading digital hub in West Africa. He described the programme as a key step in enhancing the state’s tertiary education sector and expanding youth access to technology-driven opportunities.

The commissioner stressed the importance of taking the training seriously, reminding students that the resources deployed for the initiative are public funds, which must yield measurable contributions to Lagos’ economic growth. He urged beneficiaries to apply their newly acquired skills to create jobs, increase productivity, and support the government’s broader development objectives.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Adeniran Kasali, explained that the curriculum had been carefully designed by experts in digital technology and entrepreneurship. Facilitators were selected for their practical experience and ability to guide students on achieving success in challenging environments. Kasali encouraged participants to immediately apply their knowledge, ideally before graduation, to become future employers of labour.

The three-weekend programme is being conducted simultaneously at LASU and the Lagos State College of Health Technology. It forms a core part of the current administration’s strategic efforts to prepare undergraduates for global opportunities while reinforcing Lagos’ status as a digital hub in West Africa.
