Lagos APC Dismisses Jonathan’s 2027 Comeback Speculation — According to iReporter Online

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed skepticism over growing speculations about the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

According to iReporter Online, Jonathan — who lost his re-election bid in 2015 to the late President Muhammadu Buhari — has recently made headlines as some of his loyalists are reportedly urging him to throw his hat into the ring again.

Reacting to the development, Lagos APC spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, in a statement issued Friday, argued that Jonathan’s perceived political strength is overstated and unlikely to pose any credible challenge to the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“While we acknowledge the former president’s role in the peaceful transition of power in 2015 — a gesture rightly applauded nationally and internationally — Nigeria has moved on from sentiment-driven politics,” Oladejo stated.

He emphasized that the country now demands bold, future-oriented leadership, not a return to what he described as a flawed past marked by economic inertia, insecurity, and institutional corruption.

According to iReporter Online, Oladejo did not only question the effectiveness of Jonathan’s previous leadership but also dismissed the notion that his return would benefit national development.

“The truth remains: good luck is not a policy. Emotion cannot drive reforms, and nostalgia won’t fix unemployment or insecurity,” he added.

He further raised constitutional and political concerns surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, having served more than one term in office — a situation that, he warned, could lead to legal wrangling and political instability the country cannot afford.

He also pointed out that Jonathan’s recent cross-party interactions, particularly his engagement with APC figures and absence from critical PDP activities, have muddied his political identity and raised doubts about his loyalty and intentions.

According to iReporter Online, the APC insists it is more focused on progressive governance and future-facing policies, rather than entertaining what it described as “recycled aspirations”.

“We respect former President Jonathan as an elder statesman. His peaceful legacy is intact. But legacies are not manifestoes, and nostalgia is not a governance blueprint,” Oladejo concluded.

He urged Nigerians to look forward, not backward, as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for leaders with clarity, innovation, and integrity to move the nation forward.
