Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised grave concerns about Nigeria’s current state, asserting that the country is effectively in bondage under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

According to iReporter Online, Obasanjo lamented that Nigeria remains crippled by insecurity, economic instability, and divisive ethnic politics.

Speaking at his Abeokuta residence during a visit from southern leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Obasanjo described Nigeria as stuck in a cycle of failed leadership.

He argued that until the country elects a leader who truly represents the interests of all Nigerians—rather than ethnic or sectional interests—meaningful progress will remain elusive.

“We have had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we have not yet had a true Nigerian president,” Obasanjo declared. “Someone who unites us all and governs beyond ethnic boundaries.”

According to iReporter Online, the elder statesman stressed that most political leaders today are not true nationalists, but individuals driven by self-interest and personal ambition.

He cautioned that tribalism and insincerity have derailed national unity and development, pushing Nigeria deeper into hardship.

Obasanjo urged Nigerians to stay politically active and never lose hope in the country’s potential.

He called for urgent reforms to improve security, boost the economy, and dismantle the entrenched ethnic divisions in leadership selection.

According to iReporter Online, Obasanjo concluded that unless the cycle of ethnically motivated governance is broken, Nigeria will continue to disappoint not only its citizens but also the global community watching its democratic journey.
