According to Ireporter Online, Mdundo, one of Africa’s foremost digital music distribution platforms, is steadily transforming the continent’s music industry by providing artists with the tools to distribute, promote, and monetize their craft. With a user base of over 39 million active listeners across several African countries, the platform has positioned itself as a driving force in the region’s digital music revolution.

In January 2025, Mdundo launched its bi-annual royalty payout season, ensuring earnings for hundreds of thousands of rights holders, including thousands of Nigerian artists. Since inception, more than 300,000 creators have collectively benefited from royalty payments, a landmark achievement that reinforces the company’s mission of building a sustainable ecosystem for African talent.

Chief Executive Officer of Mdundo, Martin Nielsen, expressed pride in the platform’s progress, stating that their vision remains focused on offering African artists consistent income while contributing to the long-term growth of the continent’s music industry.

A major contributor to Mdundo’s growth in Nigeria has been its strategic partnerships with MTN and Globacom. These collaborations, which leverage subscription-based services and product innovations, have widened music access for millions of Nigerians and created new revenue streams for local artistes. Chief Marketing Officer, Sowari Akosionu, noted that these partnerships have played a crucial role in strengthening the country’s music ecosystem by expanding access and boosting artist earnings.

Mdundo’s catalogue reflects a unique blend of international tracks and hyperlocal Nigerian sounds, from popular Afrobeats to indigenous genres such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa music. This localized approach not only strengthens connections with audiences but also increases visibility and income opportunities for regional creators.

Looking ahead, the company has projected royalty distributions of $1.2 million by 2026, backed by expected revenues of between $1.7 million and $2.2 million. With deeper telco integrations, an expanded subscription model, and the global reach of its Progressive Web App, Mdundo says its artist-first strategy will continue to pave the way for a more inclusive and profitable future for African music.
