Mikel Obi Backs Victor Osimhen After AFCON On-Field Clash With Teammates

According to Ireporter Online, former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has defended Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen following a heated on-field confrontation during the Super Eagles’ 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday.

The emphatic win secured Nigeria’s place in the tournament’s quarter-finals, but the match was overshadowed by an incident involving Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman midway through the second half. The Galatasaray forward appeared frustrated with what he perceived as selfish play from his teammates, directing his displeasure at Lookman and Bright Osayi-Samuel. In the course of the outburst, he brushed off the hand of captain Wilfred Ndidi, who attempted to calm him, and shortly after signaled for a substitution.

The episode continued after the game, with Osimhen skipping the customary post-match team prayers and lap of honour with fans, heading directly to the dressing room. While Lookman downplayed the incident in his post-match remarks, some fans criticized the striker’s behaviour as excessive.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel Obi defended Osimhen’s competitiveness, describing him as a passionate and committed player who “wears his heart on his sleeve” and fights relentlessly on the pitch. Obi explained that the striker’s intensity reflects his drive to perform at the highest level, comparing it to the expectations of his club environment in Turkey.

“Victor is a player who scores goals, pushes his teammates to perform, and does so with undeniable passion,” Obi said. “Frustration happens, especially when you’re in prime scoring positions. These moments show a player’s hunger and warrior mentality. I like seeing players push each other—it’s part of winning. Off the pitch, you move on, but on the pitch, the intensity is necessary.”

Despite supporting Osimhen’s competitive spirit, Obi noted areas for improvement, emphasizing that the striker should have maintained team cohesion after the incident. “The way he plays is admirable, but walking straight to the dressing room and halting effort on the pitch crosses a line,” Obi added. “It’s always about the team and the country. No individual is bigger than the national team.”
