Minimum Wage Debate: Sowore Declares ₦500,000 Monthly Salary As Workers’ Right

According to Ireporter Online, Sowore made the statement on Friday through his verified X handle, where he reacted to the recent demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a ₦500,000 minimum wage.

The activist and politician said the demand was necessary considering the current economic realities in the country and the rising cost of living affecting millions of Nigerian workers.

Sowore urged Nigerians to support leaders who prioritise workers’ welfare, accusing some political leaders of failing to address the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.

He noted that the call for a ₦500,000 minimum wage aligns with the position his party has promoted over time, describing it as a long-overdue step towards improving workers’ living conditions.

He said there must be a shift from making demands and promises to taking practical steps that would ensure Nigerian workers receive wages capable of meeting their basic needs.

Sowore added that improved salaries would help workers cope with economic pressures while contributing to a stronger and more productive workforce.

His comments followed the position adopted by labour leaders at the Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit in Birnin Kebbi, where the NLC and TUC pushed for a ₦500,000 monthly minimum wage amid concerns over inflation and declining purchasing power.

Sowore called for collective action to ensure that the demand moves beyond public discussions and becomes a reality for Nigerian workers.
