Abuja, Nigeria – May 7, 2025
In a glowing moment of pride for Nigeria, Onyokoko Okpako Ovie, a student of Graceland Secondary School, was celebrated on Wednesday for emerging as a Silver Medalist in the highly competitive Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) for Grade 10 students.
Ahead of the official award ceremony organized by the Federal Ministry of Education, Onyokoko, alongside his proud parents, Mr. & Mrs. Innocent Onyokoko, and his school principal, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, at his office in Abuja.
During the reception, the Honourable Minister commended the young scholar’s brilliance and emphasized the importance of nurturing academic talent in Nigeria.
“Onyokoko’s success is not just personal—it is national. He has shown that with focus, discipline, and the right support, Nigerian youths can compete and win globally,” Engr. Momoh stated.
The minister further encouraged educational stakeholders to invest more in platforms that promote STEM education and global academic exposure for Nigerian students.
Later that day, Onyokoko was honoured in a special ceremony hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education, where he received his Silver Medal and Certificate of Achievement from the competition’s Nigerian representative, Mercy Josiah of SIMCC Nigeria.
The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad is one of Asia’s most prestigious math competitions, drawing participation from over 30 countries. Onyokoko’s success positions Nigeria firmly on the international academic map.
Grateful for the support he received, Onyokoko said:
“This award is not just mine—it belongs to my parents, my school, and every Nigerian child with a dream. I hope it inspires others to believe in themselves.”
With the applause still echoing from Abuja, this achievement stands as a beacon of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity—and when leaders like Engr. Momoh are ready to celebrate and support Nigeria’s rising stars.
