Minister Dangiwa Urges Compliance On Ground Rent

to ensure they pay their ground rent. Dangiwa emphasized that no estate management or committee has the authority to collect ground rent from residents in these federally owned areas.

He made these remarks during a stakeholder engagement focused on land administration and a physical assessment of properties in Banana Island, Osborne Phase One and Two, Park View/Foreshore estates, and the shorelines.

According to reports from The Nation, Dangiwa reaffirmed the government’s dedication to renovating and protecting its assets nationwide, stating that it will enforce strict adherence to laws regarding land and estate administration.

“The Ministry is committed to ensuring strict compliance with legal provisions governing the management of its assets to maintain order,” he stated.

Regarding the collection of fees within federally owned estates, Dangiwa noted that estate management can collect facility management fees, which are standard for estate maintenance. However, he stressed that they should not collect ground rent.

“The ground rent is designated for the Federal Government. If they are collecting it on our behalf, it must be fully remitted; otherwise, we will enlist our own personnel or consultants to handle it,” he warned.

Dangiwa also indicated that his ministry plans to improve all federally owned properties. “We have resolved to optimize these facilities to ensure they provide value to the government and to Nigerians,” he said. “Our goal is to expedite the completion of housing projects to increase the availability of affordable housing for Lagos residents.”

On the topic of irregular developments along the Lagos shoreline, Dangiwa revealed that a one-month ultimatum had been issued to developers working in these areas.

“In order to address these issues, the ministry has given developers a one-month deadline to regularize their documentation or risk having their properties revoked and demolished. We have noticed various unauthorized constructions on reclaimed land, and this practice is unacceptable,” Dangiwa concluded.
