“More Cash For The Skies: FAAN Launches Fresh Income Stream”

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reached an agreement with key industry stakeholders to enforce the payment of statutory port charges at the Pilgrims & Cargo Terminal (PCT) of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), according to IReporter Online.

The move aims to boost FAAN’s revenue generation after nearly 18 years of significant losses attributed to non-compliance.

The enforcement drive, led by FAAN’s Directorate of Cargo Development & Services (DCDS), will prioritise transparency and accountability.

Director of Cargo Development Services, Lekan Thomas, explained that while the port charge is not a new fee, ensuring its payment before cargo leaves warehouses has been a persistent challenge.

To tackle this, FAAN plans to roll out robust access control systems and electronic platforms to guarantee compliance without disrupting cargo operations.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has pledged full cooperation, with MMIA Customs Area Comptroller, Mr. Awe, committing to brief shed heads and foster collaboration through a stakeholder forum.

This renewed push, according to IReporter Online, is attributed to the visionary leadership of FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, who has championed both innovative revenue assurance solutions and strategic partnerships to strengthen Nigeria’s role in the global air cargo market.

As part of the plan, FAAN will formalise agreements with stakeholders via Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and launch a Cargo Community Forum to engage regulators, operators, and freight forwarders in collaborative problem-solving.

Access control measures are expected to commence soon, alongside the development of an electronic stakeholder engagement platform.

The meeting that sealed these agreements was attended by FAAN, NCS, Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc (SAHCO), and Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO).

The outcome, according to IReporter Online, marks a strategic shift in how FAAN safeguards its revenue streams while fostering stronger cooperation within the aviation cargo sector.
