The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has attributed the recent deadly attacks and killings in Plateau and Benue States to foreign elements.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed that intelligence reports and arrests have revealed that many of the assailants are foreign herders who infiltrated Nigeria through its porous borders.

He explained that linguistic and physical differences helped security operatives identify the attackers as non-Nigerians.

“Their speech patterns are distinct. For instance, the Hausa dialects spoken in countries like Mali, the Central African Republic, or Ghana differ from those spoken in Nigeria,” Kangye noted.
“When we detain these individuals, both their language and appearance set them apart. While the Shuwa Arabs in Borno State may bear some resemblance, there are still clear differences.”

While acknowledging that some local actors are involved in land disputes and grazing conflicts, Kangye emphasized that the most violent and consistent assaults are carried out by foreign infiltrators.

“Yes, some Nigerians do contribute to these tensions, particularly through grazing on farmlands. But the most dangerous and recurring attacks are executed by outsiders crossing into the country,” he stated.

The DHQ called for enhanced coordination between security and border control agencies to effectively safeguard Nigeria’s vast borders and curb further infiltration.
