NATO Shoots Down Second Iranian Missile Over Turkey As Ankara Issues Fierce Warning To Tehran

According to Ireporter Online, NATO air defence systems intercepted and destroyed a second Iranian ballistic missile that entered Turkish airspace on Monday, prompting Ankara to issue a stern warning of decisive action against any threats to its territory.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry confirmed the interception, marking the second incident in a week involving Iranian missiles targeting Turkish airspace. The ministry emphasised that any future violations would be met with an immediate and firm response. “All necessary measures will be taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our country’s territory and airspace. It is in everyone’s interest to heed Turkey’s warnings,” the ministry stated.

Reports indicate that NATO defence systems stationed in the eastern Mediterranean destroyed the missile before it could reach its intended target, although officials did not disclose the missile’s precise destination. Debris from the interception fell in uninhabited fields in Gaziantep province in southeastern Turkey, causing no casualties or damage.

The United States Air Force operates from the Incirlik base in southern Turkey, while NATO runs a key radar installation in Malatya province to provide early warning coverage for alliance members. The debris landed roughly between these two strategic sites.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s communications director, Burhanettin Duran, stressed that Turkey was reinforcing its warnings, particularly to Iran, urging all parties to avoid actions that threaten regional stability and endanger civilians. Turkish officials have clarified that the Incirlik base has not been used for the ongoing US-Israeli operations against Iran, which sparked Tehran’s retaliatory missile and drone attacks in the region.

Iranian authorities did not immediately respond to the incident, though Tehran has consistently denied intentionally targeting Turkey. Ankara had previously warned Tehran to halt missile attacks following last week’s incident. Turkish officials have not requested formal NATO assistance nor invoked Article 4 consultations, which could potentially escalate to the collective defence provision under Article 5.

Despite its growing military capabilities and role as a major player in the global defence industry, Turkey continues to rely on NATO air defence systems for protection, as it has yet to establish a fully independent air defence network.
