“NBRDA Declares GMOs Safe, Urges Farmers To Embrace Biotechnology Revolution”

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has urged Nigerian farmers to adopt biotechnology as a proven, safe, and effective means of boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening food security.

At a sensitisation workshop on Biotechnology and Biosafety/Farmers’ Field Day in Jagwada, Keffi, Nasarawa State, the Director of Agricultural Biotechnology, Dr. Rose Gidado, highlighted the remarkable success of the BT Cowpea variety in addressing pest infestations and improving yields. She explained that the programme was designed to educate farmers who had not yet accessed BT Cowpea seeds, while also showcasing the experiences of those already cultivating the improved variety.

According to her, the BT Cowpea, approved for commercial release in 2019, has proven to be climate-smart, pest-resistant, and environmentally safe, with reduced pesticide requirements and early maturity. She noted that one Nigerian farmer is already exporting the grain to the United Kingdom, where it passed international quality checks.

Dr. Gidado dismissed widespread misinformation about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), insisting that biotechnology crops are safe for both cultivation and consumption. She described BT Cowpea as a milestone of Nigerian scientific achievement, made possible through collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).

One of the host farmers, Mr. Ogenomor Emmanuel, testified to the variety’s high yield and profitability, noting that while local cowpea produces about three to four bags per hectare, BT Cowpea delivers up to 22 bags. He also revealed that the crop requires fewer pesticide sprays, cooks faster, and has generated significant returns for him through exports to the UK and the US.

Other participants described the initiative as a transformative step for Nigerian agriculture, stressing that widespread adoption of biotechnology could accelerate national development, reduce hunger, and secure the country’s path to prosperity.

The NBRDA workshop forms part of a broader national campaign aimed at empowering farmers with innovative tools and science-driven solutions to ensure sustainable food production.
