NECO Makes History, Opens London Centre For Nigerians Abroad

According to Ireporter Online, the National Examinations Council (NECO) has inaugurated a new examination centre in London, United Kingdom, to provide greater access to Nigerians residing abroad who wish to complete their secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications.

The launch, which took place during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025, was described by NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, as a milestone in extending Nigeria’s educational services to the international community.

Professor Wushishi stated that the initiative, implemented in collaboration with Barnfield Education Ltd, aims to offer Nigerians in the UK—both students and adult learners—credible and convenient opportunities to sit for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). He explained that the new centre aligns with the Federal Government’s policy on inclusivity and global engagement, ensuring that Nigerians abroad can remain connected to the country’s educational system.

In a statement issued by NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, Wushishi noted that the Council now conducts examinations in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, with additional centres planned for Egypt and Burkina Faso. He also highlighted that NECO certificates are recognised by top universities such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University in the UK, as well as several institutions in the United States, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, lauded NECO’s move, describing it as a “bold and inclusive step” that supports the Federal Ministry of Education’s vision to engage the Nigerian diaspora as a strategic educational asset.

Also commenting, the Director of BEP Education and NECO’s UK partner, Dr. John Ibanga, noted that the new London centre provides an alternative route for Nigerian students who face challenges integrating into the British education system, particularly those unable to obtain the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). He said the centre will cater to both young learners and adults seeking to further their academic or vocational pursuits.

During a visit to the Nigerian High Commission in London, Professor Wushishi briefed officials on the accreditation process and emphasised the importance of the United Kingdom as a key hub for Nigeria’s global educational outreach.

In response, the Head of Political Affairs at the Nigerian High Commission, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, praised NECO’s efforts, describing them as a “commendable stride” toward strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive education and diaspora engagement. He assured that the Mission would work closely with NECO to advance educational cooperation between Nigeria and the UK.

The newly established London examination centre is expected to commence operations soon, giving Nigerian students and adult learners abroad a valuable opportunity to earn qualifications that are recognised both nationally and internationally.
