NELFUND Breaks Record With Over One Million Student Loan Applications Nationwide
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that the number of applications for its student loan scheme has surpassed one million, marking a major milestone in the nation’s pursuit of accessible education for all.
In a statement released by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND revealed that this achievement represents one of the highest participation levels recorded in a government-backed social initiative since the beginning of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The development comes less than a year after the official launch of the scheme on May 24, 2024.
The agency disclosed that over ₦116 billion has already been disbursed to students across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide. The funds cover both institutional charges and maintenance allowances, reflecting the programme’s growing reach and impact.
Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, described the achievement as a clear demonstration of the success of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which seeks to expand access to higher education and empower young Nigerians to overcome financial constraints.
The statement further noted that surpassing the one-million-application mark goes beyond statistics, symbolizing renewed hope for a generation striving to break through economic barriers to education. NELFUND credited the milestone to effective leadership, sound policy formulation, and the dedication of various stakeholders committed to advancing the initiative.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to improving operational processes to ensure that every eligible Nigerian student can access funding transparently and efficiently, regardless of socioeconomic background or geographical location. It emphasized that the student loan programme is inclusive and non-discriminatory, benefiting citizens across all religious and ethnic divides, and fostering unity through equal educational opportunities.
NELFUND reiterated that its mission remains steadfast — ensuring that no Nigerian is deprived of the opportunity to learn, grow, or contribute to national development due to financial hardship.
