New Power Minister Tegbe Pledges Better Electricity For Nigerians

According to Ireporter Online, the new Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that noticeable improvements in electricity supply will soon be experienced across the country, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to resolve longstanding challenges in the power sector.

Tegbe gave the assurance on Monday shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu, stressing that although the reforms will not yield immediate or “magical” results, the administration is steadily working toward sustainable improvements.

He acknowledged the deep-rooted issues in the sector but maintained that ongoing reforms and investments by the Tinubu administration are already beginning to show early signs of progress. According to him, while Nigerians may not fully appreciate the efforts at present, positive outcomes will soon become more evident.

The minister recalled that during his Senate confirmation, he had cautioned against unrealistic expectations, stating that the government was not promising uninterrupted 24-hour electricity in the short term, but rather gradual and visible improvements over time.

Tegbe further revealed that he has engaged key stakeholders within the sector over the past four weeks, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and other critical institutions. He said these engagements have produced renewed commitments that are already contributing to improvements in electricity delivery.

He also noted reports suggesting improved power supply in some parts of the country recently, attributing the development to coordinated efforts by sector agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Power.

While appealing for patience from Nigerians, Tegbe assured that the government is actively addressing challenges across generation, transmission, and distribution. He cited recent rapid intervention by TCN engineers in restoring a collapsed feeder in Katampe within 24 hours, as well as the resumption of operations at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company after years of inactivity, as signs of renewed efficiency in the sector.

The minister called on Nigerians to support the administration and remain hopeful, adding that with sustained commitment and cooperation, the country would eventually achieve a more stable and reliable power supply.
