Nigerian Police Academy is making headlines as it prepares to graduate over 500 cadets this Saturday, September 7, 2024. This significant event will mark the culmination of five years of intensive training for the cadets, who have undergone rigorous coursework and exercises at the academy.

Established in 1988, the Nigerian Police Academy, located in Wudil, Kano State, is one of Africa’s premier institutions for police training. It is the second police academy on the continent, following Egypt’s. Originally created in response to a 1981 request from the Nigerian government for UK police expertise, the academy has evolved significantly since its inception.

In 2012, the academy was upgraded to a degree-awarding institution, reflecting its expanded role in professionalizing Nigeria’s police force. This upgrade allowed the academy to admit SSCE holders aged 17-21 for a comprehensive five-year program, rather than the previous 12-month training for degree and NCE holders. Since this upgrade, the academy has successfully graduated five regular courses, with alumni now serving as senior officers across Nigeria.

The upcoming graduation ceremony will be attended by prominent figures, including government officials, traditional leaders, and military and police representatives. The event will celebrate the 6th Regular Course, who have completed their rigorous training and are set to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s law enforcement.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) on August 31, 2024. He congratulated the graduating cadets, stating, “IGP felicitated Regular Course 6 Cadets on their POP scheduled for 7th September 2024 in POLAC Wudil Kano. Congrats to the officers.”

This milestone highlights the academy’s ongoing commitment to developing skilled, knowledgeable officers dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s policing standards. The graduation of these 500 cadets represents a significant step forward for the Nigerian Police Force, promising enhanced security and professionalism in the years to come.
