Nigeria To Make Boxing History With First-Ever African Boxing Congress In Lagos
Nigeria is set to host the inaugural African Boxing Congress and a Boxing Gala Night in Lagos on Sunday, December 28, 2025. The landmark event is expected to bring together officials from over twenty national boxing federations across the continent, marking a significant milestone in the development of African boxing.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), under the leadership of Honourable Wale Edun, secured hosting rights following approval from African Boxing, the continent’s governing body that operates under World Boxing, the international authority for Olympic-style boxing.
In correspondence to the NBF, African Boxing described Nigeria as “a strategic nation with the capacity to lead a holistic advancement of squared ropes sports in the continent.” The letter also confirmed the appointment of NBF Vice President, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, to the African Boxing Working Committee and designated him as Head of Organisation for the December congress.
Expressing excitement about the opportunity, Imadu stated, “As a federation, we are committed to ensuring a successful event in December. Leading the organisation of this congress in Nigeria will position both the NBF and our nation at the center of the continent’s premier boxing decision-making platform.”
Hosting the congress not only elevates Nigeria’s profile in African boxing but also strengthens its chances of being selected to host the African qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The event is also expected to catalyze developmental programmes aimed at enhancing Olympic-style boxing in Nigeria.
In a further demonstration of confidence, African Boxing announced that its continental headquarters will be established in Lagos, cementing the city’s role as a key hub for boxing administration in Africa.
