Nigerian Stars Who’ve Made 100+ Games At Multiple Elite European Clubs
Across Europe’s top five leagues—England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain—only a select group of Nigerian footballers have reached the rare milestone of making at least 100 appearances for more than one club. Their exploits highlight a legacy of skill, consistency, and influence at the highest levels of the game.
Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha was a player who brought creativity and unpredictability to every match. His European journey began at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made 116 appearances, 90 of them in the Bundesliga. He later moved to Paris Saint-Germain, featuring in 113 matches, including 84 in Ligue 1 and six in the UEFA Champions League. In England, Okocha became a fan favorite at Bolton Wanderers, amassing 145 appearances with 124 in the Premier League, consistently orchestrating memorable moments on the pitch.
Nwankwo Kanu, renowned for his effortless style, made a lasting impact at Arsenal F.C. with 197 appearances across all competitions, 119 of them in the Premier League. His 44 goals and FA Cup triumphs marked him as a central figure in one of the club’s most successful periods. Kanu later added 166 appearances at Portsmouth F.C., including 100 Premier League matches, famously scoring the winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup final.
Obafemi Martins brought blistering pace and direct attacking play to every team he joined. At Inter Milan, he made 136 appearances, including 88 in Serie A, scoring 49 goals and netting nine times in the Champions League. A subsequent move to Newcastle United F.C. saw him reach 104 appearances, including 88 in the Premier League, while contributing 28 league goals and six goals in nine UEFA Cup outings.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni earned a reputation for reliability and goal-scoring consistency. During his time at Middlesbrough F.C., he made 104 appearances, scoring 35 goals, including 25 in 73 Premier League matches. At Everton F.C., Yakubu registered 107 appearances with 33 goals, 25 of which came in league play, alongside four goals in eight UEFA Cup appearances.
The modern torchbearer is Alex Iwobi, currently the only active player in this elite group. He began at Arsenal F.C., making 149 appearances, 100 in the Premier League and 17 in the Europa League. His time at Everton F.C. produced 140 appearances, 123 in the league. Now at Fulham F.C., he recently reached his 100th appearance for the club, 88 in the Premier League. Across Arsenal, Everton, and Fulham, Iwobi has accumulated 311 Premier League appearances, joining Okocha as the only Nigerians to reach 100 appearances for three separate clubs in Europe’s top five leagues.
Honorable mentions include Joseph Yobo, who reached 100 appearances for Everton but fell short elsewhere, and Kelechi Iheanacho, who achieved the milestone for Leicester City F.C. but did not reach 100 appearances for a second top-flight club.
