Nigeria’s Top Headlines Today – Saturday, 7th March 2026
Good morning, Nigeria. Welcome to today’s edition of the nation’s top news highlights. Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he will not be deterred by opposition from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its numerous governors. Speaking to supporters in Njikoka, Obi described Nigeria as being in a state of collapse and emphasised his commitment to a country where anyone, regardless of background, can succeed. He also addressed his departure from the Labour Party, noting legal obstacles and delays in recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while asserting his resolve to ensure a free and fair electoral contest.
Meanwhile, INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, has called on commission staff to uphold the integrity of the 2027 elections by conducting a credible and transparent voting process. Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Amupitan highlighted the importance of collaboration with the National Population Commission and other agencies to track and register eligible voters, warning that public trust in the electoral system hinges on staff professionalism.
In political developments, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised President Bola Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial appointments, arguing that the government violated established diplomatic norms by announcing postings before obtaining host country consent. The party warned that such breaches could expose Nigeria to international embarrassment.
President Tinubu has also expressed grief over the Boko Haram attack on Ngoshe community in Borno State, calling for a swift military response and the rescue of kidnapped citizens. Similarly, the family of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has demanded his immediate release from ICPC custody, citing expired detention orders and lack of legal justification.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, raised concerns over public access to the newly signed Electoral Act, noting during the Obafemi Awolowo Lecture 2026 that the law guiding the next general elections has not yet been made available to state officials, prompting criticism from opposition figures.
In Rivers State, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi was prevented from entering his hometown of Ubima by armed men, following attacks on ADC facilities in the area. Amaechi, who has officially joined the ADC, urged calm and discouraged retaliatory violence.
In entertainment news, Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha has alleged that he was framed by fellow actor Damilola Adekoya, known as Princess, leading to his imprisonment, while veteran actor Pete Edochie revealed he spends approximately ₦40,000 daily on electricity due to poor power supply.
