Niger’s President In Hot Water Over Allegations

President Abdourahmane Tchiani of the Niger Republic is under increasing scrutiny from his citizens following his recent claims that Nigeria is colluding with France to destabilize his country. The Nigerian government swiftly dismissed these allegations as unfounded. Key officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication Daniel Bwala, refuted Tchiani’s claims.

On social media, Tchiani’s comments have provoked backlash, with many Nigeriens questioning their validity and suggesting that he is attempting to shift blame away from his government’s shortcomings since seizing power from former President Mohamed Bazoum in a coup 17 months ago.

Maidalili Namu, a Nigerien commentator on the Muduba Mugani podcast, criticized Tchiani’s administration, stating, “The country is being governed by 16 generals leading us toward ruin.” He continued by suggesting that Tchiani has become disconnected from reality, locked away in his villa and surrounded by lies that cloud his judgment.

Namu also accused the president of inciting regional and international strife, saying, “When it was announced you would speak to the nation on December 25 at 8 PM, many suspected your speech would lack originality, filled instead with the usual accusations against France, ECOWAS, and Nigeria as our foes.”

Frustration among Nigeriens is evident, as Namu highlighted that predictions about Tchiani’s speech had been accurate, with many tracks on how frequently he mentions France, Nigeria, and ECOWAS while alleging conspiracies against Niger.

He remarked on Tchiani’s diplomatic failures, noting that he had insulted leaders from various nations, thereby implicating multiple countries in supposed plots against Niger, many of which the country has no direct relations with. Instead of addressing pressing issues like economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and rising living costs, Tchiani’s focus remained on external threats and unfounded claims of terrorist camps guided by French forces.

Namu challenged Tchiani’s claims about terrorist training camps, questioning why he hasn’t taken action against them if he has reliable intelligence about their locations. He pointed out that many leaders insulted by Tchiani have not retaliated, prompting doubts about the credibility of his statements.

Additionally, Namu criticized Tchiani for neglecting humanitarian crises in the country, such as flooding and the displacement of thousands due to terrorism. He cited the alarming statistic that over 4.6 million people currently face hardship, with more than 2,300 victims lost to terrorist attacks since the coup.

Another Nigerien commentator, Hamid Ahmadu, echoed similar sentiments, calling Tchiani’s statements illogical and highlighting his geographical errors, like incorrectly referencing Tanzania in the context of terrorism.

Citizens are calling for accountability, transparency, and leadership focused on development and security in Niger. Reports from Nigerian defense expert Zagazola indicate that an alleged WhatsApp message from Nigerien military authorities encouraged loyalists to bolster support for the junta by spreading claims that France, along with Nigeria, plans to attack Niger.

Zagazola further disputed Tchiani’s assertion of a French military presence in regions like Borno State, stating there is no credible evidence supporting such claims and attributing the ongoing violence to local terrorist groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram instead. He noted that local circumstances and terror group influences are complex and cannot simply be attributed to external forces, particularly given the severe environmental challenges facing the areas mentioned.
