NiMet Issues 3-Day Flood Alert for Katsina, Kebbi, Other High-Risk States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a critical weather advisory warning of imminent flooding across several states from Monday to Wednesday. The forecast predicts intense rainfall and thunderstorms that may trigger flash floods in vulnerable areas, with Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto identified as high-risk zones.

According to the agency’s Sunday alert, northern states including Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa should expect moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Central regions such as Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger face potential flooding, while southern states including Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are likely to experience continuous downpours.

NiMet’s detailed outlook indicates thunderstorms will dominate northern regions on Monday, spreading across central and southern states by Tuesday. By Wednesday, widespread thunderstorms are expected to cover most northern zones with intermittent showers predicted for central and southern areas. The agency emphasized these weather patterns could lead to dangerous flooding in low-lying communities.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to take immediate precautions, including avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and securing loose outdoor objects. Farmers received specific warnings to delay fertilizer application to prevent nutrient wash-off, while all citizens were cautioned to avoid standing under trees during storms.

The weather agency particularly urged flood-prone communities to activate emergency response plans and monitor updates through NiMet’s official channels. Airline operators were advised to obtain real-time weather briefings for flight safety considerations.

This warning comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with annual flood incidents that have previously caused significant displacement, infrastructure damage, and economic losses. State emergency management agencies are expected to coordinate preparedness measures in response to the latest forecast.

Authorities are reminding the public that timely adherence to safety guidelines could prevent loss of life and property as the heavy rains approach. The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency is expected to provide complementary flood risk assessments in the coming days.
