No Zoning: President Tinubu Dispels Zoning Notions For Edo Elections During Key Meeting With Oshiomhole
In a dramatic turn of events following his visit to President Tinubu at the villa, former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has set tongues wagging with his scathing denouncement of alleged imposition tactics within the party. In a passionate and no-holds-barred speech, Oshiomhole lashed out at those he accused of attempting to manipulate the democratic process for their own ends..
I have the authority of the President to address the press on this matter, because of the various lies and half-truths, Oshiomhole stated confidently, laying the groundwork for a passionate critique of what he sees as efforts to subvert the wishes of the populace.
The crux of Oshiomhole’s argument lies in the fundamental principle of democracy: the voice of the majority must prevail. He vehemently rejected the notion of individual or elite consensus dictating the outcome of elections, emphasizing that the true test of fairness lies in a process that reflects the genuine choices of the electorate.
Drawing on parallels with other states and historical precedents, Oshiomhole challenged the concept of zoning and turn-by-turn democracy, stating his belief in a merit-based system in which competence and performance are the ultimate yardsticks for leadership, citing Kogi and Benue State elections as examples.
I am not a product of zoning. I am not a believer in turn-by-turn democracy, Oshiomhole declared emphatically, invoking his own electoral victories as evidence of his convictions.
Amid the heated rhetoric, Oshiomhole made it quite apparent that the President is committed to the principles of fairness and meritocracy. He restated guarantees from the highest levels of power that the APC primaries would be held democratically, with members choosing their own flagbearer.
With the battle lines drawn and tensions running high, all eyes are now on the APC primaries, where the true test of democracy will unfold under the watchful gaze of the Nigerian public.
In the words of Oshiomhole himself, Fairness is not by individual allocating, fairness is by the process. And as the nation braces itself for the forthcoming electoral showdown, one thing remains certain: the fight for the soul of democracy in Nigeria has only just begun.
