Ogun Court Rejects Kwam 1’s Attempt To Halt Next Awujale Selection

According to Ireporter Online, a State High Court in Ogun State has dismissed a suit filed by popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, widely known as Kwam 1, seeking to halt the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Kwam 1 had previously declared his interest in ascending to the Awujale throne. However, his claim to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House was challenged, with the Ruling House rejecting his lineage submission and declaring his completed linkage form invalid. Following this, Kwam 1 approached the court, requesting an order to suspend the selection process until his suit is determined.

Respondents in the case include the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun; the Executive Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government; the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ogun State; the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government; the Chairman of the Awujale Interregnum Administrative Council; and the Chairman of Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi.

The application, a Motion Ex Parte, was brought under Order 38 Rule 4 and Order 39 Rule 1 of the High Court of Ogun State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2024, Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, and the inherent jurisdiction of the court. Kwam 1 sought an interim injunction to restrain the respondents or anyone acting on their behalf from proceeding with the installation of the next Awujale pending the outcome of the substantive suit.

Justice A. A. Omoniyi ruled on Monday that the application lacked merit and declined to grant the interim injunction, allowing the selection process to continue. The court has scheduled an accelerated hearing for the case on January 14, 2026.
