Oluremi Tinubu Launches Massive Rollout Of 370,000 Free Sanitary Pads To Rural Schoolgirls

According to Ireporter Online, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has rolled out the distribution of 370,000 disposable sanitary pads to schoolgirls in rural communities across Nigeria, a move aimed at improving menstrual hygiene and strengthening support for girls’ education.

The initiative was unveiled during the national launch of the “Flow with Confidence” programme held at The DOME in Akure, Ondo State, an event that brought together hundreds of schoolgirls. The First Lady, represented by the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, explained that the programme was developed to enhance dignity, promote hygiene, and boost the confidence of young girls who often miss school due to lack of menstrual products.

She disclosed that each state, including the Federal Capital Territory, will receive 10,000 packs of sanitary pads through their First Ladies and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). Mrs Tinubu noted that disposable pads were selected because they offer a simple, safe and hygienic solution that protects reproductive health.

“For us at the Renewed Hope Initiative, no girl should ever be forced to choose between her dignity and her education,” she stated. She further urged local government chairmen and their spouses to ensure the distribution reaches the girls who genuinely need the support, stressing that the items must never be sold.

The First Lady expressed worry that many girls still rely on unsafe alternatives during menstruation, while some stay away from school entirely, risking poor academic performance or dropping out.

Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Oluwaseun Osamaye, praised Senator Tinubu for what she described as a bold national intervention that prioritises the dignity and well-being of Nigerian girls. She said the initiative aligns with the state’s human capital development vision under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, commended the First Lady, saying the programme will significantly enhance the confidence of schoolgirls nationwide. He applauded Mrs Aiyedatiwa for her dedication to issues affecting the girl child.
