“Oluremi Tinubu Raises Alarm: ‘Nigeria’s Digital Space Is Unsafe For Women—Action Needed Now!’”
According to Ireporter Online, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has urged government agencies, technology firms, civil society groups, and Nigerians at large to take decisive and coordinated steps to ensure that the country’s digital environment becomes safer and more respectful for women and girls.
Her call was contained in a message released in commemoration of the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed globally on November 25. This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls,” highlights growing concerns over harassment, exploitation, and gender-based hostility occurring across online platforms.
Senator Tinubu noted that the digital space—originally designed to enhance learning, innovation, and social connection—has increasingly turned into a place where women and girls face bullying, blackmail, stalking, and misogynistic attacks. She cautioned that online abuse has become a dangerous and often hidden extension of violence against women.
She stressed that digital platforms should promote genuine interaction, knowledge-sharing, and productivity rather than fear, calling on the legislature, judiciary, tech industry, advocacy groups, and citizens to take bold and united action to protect women online.
Expressing solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence nationwide, the First Lady described all forms of abuse, whether physical or digital, as a violation of the dignity and potential of women and girls. She emphasised the need for stronger advocacy, tighter legal safeguards, and greater institutional accountability to curb the rising trend of gender-based abuse.
Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of Nigerian women and girls, urging collective reflection and renewed national determination to eliminate violence in all its forms.
