One Dead, One Arrested as Cult Violence Erupts in Abia

A suspected cultist was fatally shot and another apprehended after a violent cult clash in Umuahia, Abia State, on Sunday, June 23, 2025.

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed the incident during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. He described the occurrence as a security breach involving rival cult groups.

Kanu disclosed that the trouble began when a cult group attacked and macheted a resident around Imo Lane off Uzuakoli Road, prompting a response from the state-backed security outfit, Operation Crush, after a local resident raised the alarm.

Upon arrival, the cultists reportedly fled the scene. In the process of dispersing them, security agents fired warning shots, one of which struck a fleeing suspect. Another suspect was captured and is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The injured civilian is receiving treatment in a nearby hospital, while the deceased cultist’s body has been taken to a morgue.

Addressing media reports, Kanu emphasized that contrary to false narratives making rounds online, no innocent bystander was mistakenly shot by the security team.

Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd.), the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, described the area as a known hotspot for cultism and criminal activities, particularly involving commercial tricycle riders. He confirmed that the arrested individual was found with a locally fabricated pistol.

Ubah reaffirmed the government’s determination to maintain public safety, saying, “There is no hiding place for criminals in Abia. We are committed to ensuring residents sleep peacefully.”
