Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted the reported increase in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the third quarter of 2024 as an indicator of better times ahead.

Speaking during the National Economic Council’s (NEC) 147th meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Shettima praised the Council members for their contributions to the economy’s development. He urged them to prepare for the upcoming year, recognizing the impact of this year’s projects and policies on the nation’s economic landscape.

In a statement from his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima pointed out that this meeting not only marks the year’s conclusion for the Council but also serves as a moment to evaluate the progress made towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Nigerian populace, with an emphasis on prioritizing collective interests.

“Difficult choices have been made to recalibrate our national economy, and the outcomes are starting to be evident. The recent 3.46% GDP growth for the third quarter of 2024 is an encouraging sign of the yields to come. This growth signifies not mere statistics but the collaborative efforts and sacrifices of all stakeholders present here.

“Our agenda includes a presentation on the current economic situation by the World Bank. This discussion is timely as we approach what is anticipated to be our season of harvest. The economic measures we have implemented this year are starting to show results,” he stated.

The NEC Chairman emphasized that the discussions, differing opinions, and various interests brought forward during the meetings reflect democratic principles.

He affirmed that every recommendation from the Council would be given due consideration.

“This demonstrates the strength of the democratic values that shape this Council, upheld by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. A true democrat, he has stood by you, acknowledged your voices, and ensured this Council remains a hub of collaborative governance.

“As members of the executive branch, we understand that our role is part of a larger system defined by checks and balances, which ensures every decision serves the majority, not just a few. I assure you that no recommendation or suggestion put forth here has been overlooked,” he noted.

Senator Shettima also mentioned that the World Bank’s Economic Report presented during the meeting offers a significant opportunity for the country.

“This initiative aims to enhance our basic education and primary healthcare systems, bolstering our human capital development in impactful ways.

“Through focused strategies, we can tackle enduring inequalities and prepare our workforce to thrive in an increasingly dynamic global economy,” he added.
