Over 250 Senior Police Officers Elevated in New Promotion Wave

The Police Service Commission has approved a significant round of promotions affecting high-ranking officers across the Nigeria Police Force. In a move seen as part of efforts to reinvigorate leadership within the Force, 12 Commissioners of Police have been elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General, according to a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations.

The statement revealed that an additional 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to substantive Commissioners, while 27 Assistant Commissioners ascended to the rank of Deputy Commissioners. However, one officer was reported absent during the evaluation process and was thus excluded from the promotions.

In a broader elevation exercise, the Commission promoted 145 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners. These include officers from both general duty and specialized units such as the Airwing, medical corps, pharmacists, lab scientists, physiotherapists, nurses, clergy, and aircraft engineers. Furthermore, 29 Superintendents—who serve in specialist fields including Information Technology, Works, and Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS)—were promoted to Chief Superintendents of Police. The Commission also endorsed the elevation of 38 Deputy Superintendents (specialists) to the rank of Superintendents.

His final report was submitted to the Commission in plenary, where the promotions were officially approved.

Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, reaffirmed the importance of the promotion exams, stating that the process would remain a permanent fixture in the Commission’s operations, aligning with global best practices. He emphasized that officers who are unwilling to adapt and excel under this new structure would be shown the way out.
