Over 5 Million Households Benefiting From Federal Government Cash Transfer Programmes

According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government has confirmed that more than 5.5 million Nigerian households are currently receiving support through its cash transfer initiatives.

Dr. Bernard Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, disclosed this on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, during the inaugural meeting of the Act Naija Project National Steering Committee in Abuja. Represented by his aide, Abimbola Fasanu, the minister highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening systems that address poverty, vulnerability, and humanitarian challenges across the country.

Key programmes include the Conditional Cash Transfer, the Grant for Vulnerable Groups, N-POWER, GEEP, Homegrown School Feeding, and National Social Safety-Net Coordination. Dr. Doro noted that over 19.78 million households have been registered in the National Social Register, with more than 5 million Nigerians, including women and youths across all 774 local government areas, benefiting from cash transfers and micro-credit schemes.

The minister further stated that the ministry is collaborating with stakeholders to review and update the National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) to reflect emerging socio-economic realities and align with the administration’s strategic objectives.

He emphasized that the Act Naija project, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to empower vulnerable households while ensuring transparency and measurable outcomes. “The committee is critical in providing strategic guidance and harmonising efforts across stakeholders,” Dr. Doro added, urging members to uphold integrity in their roles.

Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, described the committee’s inauguration as a major step toward enhancing Nigeria’s social protection system, stressing that the ultimate goal is to establish a comprehensive safety-net framework that leaves no Nigerian without essential social support.
