Passengers Stranded At Lagos Jetty

Passengers traveling from Badore Jetty to Ikorodu, Lagos, found themselves stranded due to water hyacinths obstructing boat services…READ MORE…

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the jetty on Wednesday, travelers expressed their frustrations.

Mr. Tunde Adaranijo conveyed his disappointment after arriving early to catch a boat to Ijede for a church fellowship, only to find operators unable to launch due to the invasive plants. “This is disheartening. The government needs to find a permanent solution to the annual water hyacinth issues that affect boat services,” he stated.

Mrs. Ngozi Eze also voiced her discontent, noting that the waterways, which typically provide a quicker transit option, had become unreliable during the holiday season because of persistent hyacinth problems. “I aimed to avoid the usual Christmas traffic, yet here I am, stuck. The government must invest in regular maintenance of the waterways to prevent this from happening,” she said.

Mr. Deji Adeniyi expressed hope for swift and effective measures to manage water hyacinth in Lagos’s waterways, especially during peak travel seasons. “This invasive plant has been a significant challenge, particularly in the dry season when it proliferates,” he added.

A boat operator, Mr. Adewale Oladipo, underscored the difficulties faced by commercial boat services during this season, noting that the heavy mats of water hyacinth often damage propellers, prompting operators to suspend services to avoid accidents. “This is a serious issue for us. Frequently, we incur significant repair costs due to the damage caused by these plants,” he remarked.
