Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the growing trend of defections by opposition lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to patriotism and renewed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to Ireporter Online, Akpabio made the remark on Wednesday night after leading Senator Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North, and Senator Kaila Samaila of Bauchi North, to a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Both lawmakers recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Akpabio explained that the lawmakers’ decision to switch allegiance was inspired by the president’s economic reforms and his administration’s determination to reposition the nation.

“They (Jarigbe and Samaila) are Mr. President’s children and supporters. The president is the father of the nation and the father of all political parties. Although they came to the Senate on different political platforms, the policies of Mr. President—especially his efforts in strengthening the economy and enhancing national revenue—have motivated them to join hands in building Nigeria,” Akpabio said.

He further emphasized that the lawmakers’ move was purely driven by patriotism rather than political opportunism. “They are not after which party is in power; their concern is who can truly develop Nigeria and ensure that Nigerians can have food on their tables,” he added.

Senator Jarigbe also spoke after the meeting, noting that his decision to join the APC was based on his conviction that President Tinubu is performing creditably in office.

“I joined the APC because the president is really doing well. I want to support him in delivering the dividends of democracy to our people,” the lawmaker stated.
