PDP on the Brink? Saraki Battles to Quell South-East Revolt in Tense Enugu Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Special Reconciliation Committee, led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, held a pivotal closed-door meeting with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah on Friday.

According to reports, Governor Mbah—recognized as the PDP’s South-East leader—received the reconciliation delegation at the Government House in Enugu.

The meeting forms part of ongoing interventions aimed at halting the recent spate of defections destabilizing the party and threatening its future electoral prospects.

Saraki was joined by former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson and former Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo. The committee has been tasked with mending internal divisions and restoring unity within the party.

This development follows a major political move by South-East PDP leaders, who recently re-nominated former National Youth Leader Sunday Udeh-Okoye to complete the tenure of the party’s National Secretary. The decision, however, triggered internal tension and came with a stern warning.

In a communique, South-East PDP leaders declared:

“Should the party fail to act swiftly on our position, we in the South-East PDP will be forced to reassess our continued membership and participation in the PDP going forward.”

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Saraki emphasized the significance of the South-East to the PDP’s legacy and strength.

“This is our first stop because we deeply value the South-East’s role as a cornerstone of the PDP. Governor Mbah has shown exemplary leadership, and what he is doing in Enugu stands as a model of what PDP governance can deliver,” Saraki said.

He added that the discussions covered preparations for a peaceful, inclusive National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and party convention—key to rebuilding a stronger PDP.

“We’ve had a constructive, fruitful dialogue. We’re taking away valuable insights and suggestions from this meeting. With this, we believe Enugu has set the stage for a renewed, revitalized PDP.”
