PDP Remains Strong, Will Not Enter Any Coalition – Former Obasanjo Minister

Professor Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information and National Orientation and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, has firmly stated that the PDP will not enter any coalition or merge with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We are not going to join any coalition. PDP is a very solid and organized political party and absolutely trusted by Nigerians,” Gana said during an interview with Daily Sun after attending the Nupe Christian Fellowship International Conference in Bida, Niger State.

He highlighted the PDP’s significant role in Nigeria’s democratic history, stressing its contributions to restoring democracy and promoting good governance, fairness, justice, and equity. While acknowledging that the party, now in opposition, is facing internal challenges, Gana expressed confidence that these issues would soon be resolved, positioning the PDP as a credible alternative in the upcoming election.

Reflecting on past mistakes, Gana noted that power-sharing agreements within the party had been altered, a move he believes led to the PDP’s current situation. He pointed to the 1998 formation of the PDP, which was based on an agreement to ensure fairness between the North and South. However, Gana regretted the deviation from this agreement, especially in 2023, when certain party members advocated for power to remain in the North instead of shifting back to the South, as originally planned. He described this as a “serious mistake” but remains hopeful that the party will rectify this.

Gana assured Nigerians that the PDP is working on a new leadership structure and plans to present a strong and credible candidate for the 2027 elections. He reiterated the party’s commitment to restoring peace and economic prosperity, much like it did during its previous time in power.

On the topic of coalitions, Gana reiterated that the PDP will not merge with any political party, stressing that the PDP itself is a powerful and tested coalition, integral to Nigeria’s democratic progress since its formation in 1998. He believes that with the right leadership, the PDP will offer Nigerians a purposeful and effective government.

“There is no need for a merger or coalition with any political party. PDP is the only tested and trusted political party capable of bringing about Nigeria’s greatness,” Gana concluded.
