Peace Won’t Come If You Call Us Terrorists – Bandit Leader Ado Aleru Warns Government

Notorious bandit leader, Ado Aleru, has issued a chilling warning that his group will not cease attacks as long as society continues to brand them as terrorists. This was revealed by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who reported that Aleru made the statement during a peace dialogue in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Aleru, speaking on behalf of his armed group, argued that the roots of violence in the North-West lie in years of systemic neglect, marginalisation, and perceived injustice faced by pastoralist communities. He claimed the “terrorist” label has worsened the conflict, hindering reconciliation efforts.

“If we are still being called terrorists, then do not expect us to stop behaving like terrorists,” Aleru reportedly said, suggesting that derogatory terms fuel resentment and resistance.

He insisted that many bandits, especially the younger ones, were not naturally violent but were forced into conflict due to harsh conditions and lack of opportunity. He expressed a desire to return to a time when farmers and herders coexisted peacefully and security agencies acted with fairness.

The dialogue is part of ongoing efforts by local authorities and security forces to end the region’s long-standing insecurity. However, Aleru’s statements have raised serious concerns about the sincerity of such peace initiatives.
