Peter Obi’s Political Clout Declines Sharply, Tinubu Aide Declares Career Over

According to political analysts, Peter Obi’s influence in Nigeria’s political landscape has sharply declined since the 2023 general elections. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, said in an interview on The Clarity Zone Podcast that Obi will not secure even a quarter of the votes he received in 2023.

Bwala described Obi’s political rise as temporary, attributing it to Christian voter apathy at the time. He argued that the former presidential candidate failed to establish a sustainable political structure or vision, unlike other leaders who have maintained long-term influence.

“The majority of the Christian communities that supported Obi in 2023 have now shifted their support to President Bola Tinubu,” Bwala noted. He emphasized that Obi’s 2023 campaign capitalized on a unique circumstance in which a major political party fielded a Muslim vice-presidential candidate, which created an opening among Christian voters.

Bwala concluded that Obi’s political career effectively ended after the 2023 elections, stating, “He rode on an opportunity that presented itself in 2023… Peter Obi is not at the moment a subject in the political terrain. He will not get a quarter of the votes he got in 2023.”
