Plateau Eases Jos North Curfew As Security Situation Improves

The adjustment was disclosed on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, who stated that the decision came after consultations with relevant security agencies operating in the state. She explained that the move was aimed at gradually restoring normal activities while ensuring continued vigilance.

Ramnap noted that the review of the curfew became necessary in view of the “satisfactory improvement” in security conditions following recent disturbances that led to the initial imposition of restrictions. The curfew had earlier been enforced after the March 29 attack on Angwan Rukuba, where armed assailants reportedly killed over 20 residents in a violent evening raid.

Following the attack, the situation escalated into heightened tension across surrounding communities, with fears of reprisal attacks and disruptions to daily life. The initial 48-hour curfew imposed at the time was later extended as authorities worked to contain the unrest.

The crisis also affected social and academic activities, including a disruption at the University of Jos, which was forced to postpone examinations and limit movement due to safety concerns. During the period, a mass burial for victims was also delayed following protests by women and youths demanding the release of arrested community members, who were later freed to ease tensions.

In response to the security challenges, President Bola Tinubu had visited the state, assuring residents of stronger security deployment and a commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of the violence are brought to justice.

Despite ongoing government interventions, sporadic attacks have continued to be reported in parts of Plateau State, including Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South, raising concerns over the activities of armed groups in some rural and peri-urban areas.

The state government, however, maintained that the easing of the curfew forms part of broader efforts to restore normalcy. It warned that the restriction remains in effect and must be strictly observed by residents.

Ramnap further urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies, adhere to the stipulated curfew hours, and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that security forces will continue enforcement operations while working toward sustained peace and stability in affected communities.
