‘Plot To Suppress NLC Leadership’: Ajaero Faces Allegations

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asserted that efforts to silence its leadership, particularly under President Joe Ajaero, are underway through state-sponsored harassment and intimidation. This follows recent developments where Ajaero was invited by the police to answer allegations including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, and cybercrime.

In an interview with Vanguard, an NLC leader emphasized that the Congress remains unwavering in its stance against the government’s policies, which they claim are causing widespread suffering and hunger among Nigerians. The leader accused certain interest groups of attempting to stifle the NLC’s voice and undermine its leadership.

The NLC has warned that if Ajaero is arrested, its affiliates are prepared to take significant action to shut down the economy in protest. The leader criticized the government’s actions as an attempt to suppress legitimate dissent and obscure underlying issues of public distress.

Human rights lawyer and NLC counsel, Femi Falana, SAN, has provided a legal justification for Ajaero’s inability to attend the police summons on Tuesday, stating that the labour leader is scheduled to appear on August 29. Falana suggested that the current circumstances reflect broader attempts to undermine the NLC’s influence and obstruct its advocacy efforts.
