Police Intensify Crackdown On Tinted Cars Across The Country

The development was confirmed on Friday in Abuja by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, who stated that security intelligence revealed a recurring pattern in which vehicles used for criminal operations often feature tinted windows, concealed number plates, or improper registration.

Sanusi explained that such modifications are frequently exploited by offenders to conceal their identities, evade detection, and hinder law enforcement operations, thereby posing a significant threat to public safety within the capital city.

He noted that the decision to begin the enforcement action was informed by intelligence reports showing that criminal groups operating within the FCT regularly rely on such vehicles to carry out unlawful activities.

The police commissioner further disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, had directed the command to commence a comprehensive operation targeting motorists violating regulations on tinted windows, covered number plates, and vehicle documentation requirements.

He clarified that the operation is not directed at motorists who have obtained lawful permits for tinted glass, but rather individuals who exploit such vehicles to facilitate criminal acts.

Sanusi revealed that over 30 vehicles have already been impounded during the ongoing operation, with affected vehicles found to be in violation of existing regulations, including improper tinting, concealed plates, or absence of valid registration documents.

He added that owners of the seized vehicles will be prosecuted under applicable federal laws and the provisions of the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023, stressing that the enforcement exercise will continue as part of broader efforts to enhance security and reduce crime in Abuja.
