Power Crisis Deepens: Four North-East States Remain in Total Blackout

Four days past the promised restoration deadline, four states in Nigeria’s North-East—Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba—remain completely without electricity, sparking public outrage over the Yola Electricity Distribution Company’s (YEDC) failure to deliver on its commitment.

YEDC had assured residents that power would be restored by 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2025, but as of press time, the blackout continues. The company previously attributed the outage to critical upgrade works by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the Jos–Gombe 330kV and Jos–Bauchi–Gombe 132kV lines. These works include new tower installations and rerouting of existing lines.

The unending power cut has disrupted daily life and crippled economic activities across the affected states. Business owners lament rising operational costs and reduced productivity, while residents describe the situation as intolerable.

Some residents in Taraba told Daily Post they no longer trust YEDC and called for the company to be replaced with a more efficient operator. They insist that reliable electricity is essential for the region’s development and basic living conditions.

Amid growing dissatisfaction, there are increasing calls for urgent federal intervention to resolve the crisis and hold YEDC accountable for its repeated failures.
