Premier League Milestone: Iwobi Joins Exclusive African Football Hall Of Fame
Super Eagles star, Alex Iwobi, has cemented his place in English Premier League history by becoming one of the few African players to reach 50 appearances for three different clubs. On Sunday, Iwobi marked this milestone during Fulham’s..Premier League Milestone: Iwobi Joins Exclusive African Football Hall Of Fame
thrilling 2-2 draw with Ipswich, playing 63 minutes in the match.
British sports data company Opta celebrated Iwobi’s achievement ahead of the game, highlighting his impressive EPL career. This milestone places the 28-year-old in a prestigious group of African legends, alongside Nwankwo Kanu (Arsenal, Portsmouth, West Brom), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth), El Hadji Diouf (Bolton, Blackburn, Liverpool), and Mohamed Diamé (Wigan, West Ham, Newcastle).
Iwobi, now in his second season with Fulham, has made 273 appearances in the Premier League across ten seasons, contributing 27 goals and 32 assists. Compared to other African icons, only Aiyegbeni and Kanu have better goal contributions. Aiyegbeni scored 95 goals and registered 26 assists in 252 appearances, while Kanu netted 54 goals and made 29 assists in the same number of games as Iwobi.
Iwobi continues to climb up the ranks among Nigeria’s all-time top scorers in the Premier League, currently tied with Victor Anichebe for eighth place with 27 goals, just one behind Obafemi Martins (28). He began his top-flight journey with Arsenal in the 2015/2016 season, where he made 93 appearances and scored 11 goals before moving to Everton in 2019. At Everton, he made 123 appearances and netted six goals.
In his current spell at Fulham, Iwobi has been in outstanding form, registering 10 goals in 50 appearances, making him the club’s second-highest scorer, just behind Raul Jimenez. This season, he has also added three assists to his tally, ranking behind Antonee Robinson and Adama Traore at Fulham in that category.
Iwobi made his Premier League debut in October 2015, scoring two goals in his first two league starts. Throughout his career, he has won prestigious trophies, including the FA Cup in 2016/2017 and the FA Community Shield in 2015 and 2017 with Arsenal. This season, Iwobi is in his best form yet, equaling his previous season’s goal tally with five goals and three assists in 20 matches.
After initially representing England at youth level, Iwobi switched his allegiance to Nigeria and made his senior international debut in October 2015. He has since featured in the 2018 World Cup and three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, earning a bronze medal in 2019 and a silver medal in 2023.
