Prostitution Sparks Closure Of Kano Tomato Market

The Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in the Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State has been closed due to reports of prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities…READ MORE…

Sources indicate that the alleged misconduct involving some youths and married women within the market led local authorities to take action in order to restore order.

The Council Chairman, Aminu Kadawa, confirmed the closure, stating that all market occupants were given a seven-day notice to vacate or face legal repercussions.

“Given how the market has devolved into a hub for prostitution and other illicit behaviors, it must be closed indefinitely to restore civility,” he said.

Kadawa noted that further announcements will be made regarding the market’s reopening.

In support of the decision, Aisha Saji, the Commissioner for Tourism and Management, mentioned her prior experience addressing similar issues when she served as the Commissioner for Women Affairs. During that time, she coordinated a raid that resulted in the arrest of 43 individuals—34 females and 9 males—aged between 15 and 18 for engaging in prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol.

“Disturbingly, 14 of those arrested tested positive for HIV; 10 were aware of their status while four were not,” Saji added.

The arrested individuals came not only from Kano but also from neighboring states such as Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba.

Saji further commented that she had previously recommended demolishing the market to create a skills acquisition center aimed at addressing unemployment in the region.

“This closure should mark the end of immoral activities and serve as a foundation for future development,” she stressed, highlighting the need for a skills development institution to provide sustainable livelihoods for youth in the area.
