Reps Form Ad Hoc Committee to Tackle Plateau, National Security Crises

The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad hoc committee tasked with organising a national security conference aimed at addressing the lingering crisis in Plateau State and surrounding regions.

During the inauguration held in Abuja on Tuesday, committee chairman, Rep. Hammed Waheed (APC-Lagos), condemned the ongoing violence in Plateau, highlighting its devastating toll on communities, families, and the state’s socio-economic fabric.

He stressed that the repeated outbreaks of violence had resulted in mass displacements, destroyed livelihoods, and strained ethnic and religious relations.

Waheed noted that the impact of these crises extended beyond Plateau, affecting neighbouring states and posing a broader threat to Nigeria’s unity and security.

He explained that the House’s decision to establish the committee followed a motion adopted at its May 8 plenary session, reflecting lawmakers’ commitment to addressing citizens’ concerns.

According to him, the committee’s mission is to convene a robust security conference that will engage key stakeholders — including security agencies, traditional and community leaders, civil society groups, youth and women organisations, researchers, and political figures.

He emphasised that the conference would go beyond rhetoric, aiming for honest conversations, healing, and practical, sustainable solutions.

“This is not just another conference,” Waheed stated. “It’s a vital platform for truth-telling, reconciliation, and formulating decisive policy recommendations to resolve the Plateau crisis and prevent its spread.”
