Rice Prices Drop Despite High Inflation: Updated Market Rates Unveiled
Despite Nigeria’s inflation rate reaching 33.20% in March 2024, the price of a 50-kilogram bag of locally parboiled rice in Abuja has decreased by 19% to ₦68,000 from ₦84,000 in February. This decline in rice prices contrasts with the general trend of rising food prices, which soared to 40.01% in March……READ ALSO NBS Report: Local Rice Prices Surge By 98.47% In Just One Year
An Abuja trader was arrested for repackaging local rice into foreign rice bags to make excess profits. Despite the inflation rate, the Naira’s gain in the foreign exchange market did not significantly impact the prices of goods and services, raising concerns among citizens.
Amaka Ubani, a trader in Dutse market, stated that although rice prices dropped marginally, customers still find them high. Local rice prices decreased to ₦68,000 per 50kg bag from ₦72,000 to ₦84,000 in March. However, foreign rice brands like Royal Stallion and Mama Gold are scarce in the market due to their high prices, which reach ₦90,000 per 50kg bag.
Betty Retail shop in Kubwa market confirmed selling Big Bull rice at ₦68,000 per bag, while other shops offer prices ranging between ₦68,000 and ₦72,000 for various rice varieties.
The fluctuation in rice prices despite high inflation rates reflects the complex dynamics of Nigeria’s economic landscape and highlights the challenges faced by both traders and consumers in navigating these fluctuations.
