According to reports, the Rivers State government has clarified that its annual N100,000 Christmas bonus is distributed to all civil servants, public office holders, and pensioners without discrimination. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, emphasized that the bonus is part of a consistent practice over the past three years and is intended as a token of appreciation for the dedication and service of state workers throughout the year.

The clarification comes following commendation from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the recent disbursement. Although members of the House of Assembly returned the bonus to the state treasury, the government affirmed that the payment applies broadly to all employees on the state payroll system.

Dr. Sirawoo highlighted that the Rivers State government views the NLC as a critical partner in its “Rivers First” development agenda. He added that Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains committed to policies that provide a social safety net for state workers and their families, with a continued focus on improving working conditions and employee welfare.

The permanent secretary described state employees as “the greatest pride” of the Rivers State government and noted that while the bonus brightens the festive season, long-term initiatives are aimed at sustaining the welfare and professional environment for all serving Rivers State.
