Lagos State Reiterates Commitment to Road Safety, Driver Training Initiatives

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving road safety and advancing sustainable transportation through continued investments in transport infrastructure, digital technology, and capacity-building for driving instructors and trainers.

According to iReporter Online, this commitment was reiterated by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 5th edition of the Lagos State Drivers Institute’s (LASDRI) Annual Driving School Instructors’ Training, held on Thursday at the SOT Event Centre, Alausa.

Osiyemi highlighted the importance of building strong partnerships across government tiers and industry stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and professionalism among drivers in Lagos.

“This event underscores our administration’s ongoing efforts to develop a world-class transport system. Empowering instructors and upscaling training standards are key steps toward achieving that,” Osiyemi said.

Themed “Drivers’ Education: Partnership for Economic Growth and Development”, the event served as a platform to advocate safer driving habits and enhance economic development through improved road safety practices.

According to iReporter Online, the General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, emphasized the role of foundational driver training in reducing road accidents and promoting responsible road use.

“As the first point of contact for learner drivers, LASDRI is focused on training and certifying individuals in a way that positively reshapes driving culture across Lagos,” Tiamiyu stated. “We expect today’s engagement to reflect in fewer crashes and safer roads, which in turn will boost the state’s economy.”

This year marks the fifth consecutive edition of the training, aimed at equipping driving schools, instructors, and drivers with modern knowledge, tools, and strategies to raise driving standards in Lagos.

Commending LASDRI for its forward-thinking approach, Osiyemi lauded the agency’s adoption of computer-based recertification, its three-tier training system, and a data-driven instructional model as signs of a more accountable and responsive regulatory body.

“LASDRI is also playing a vital role in enforcing compliance with e-Hailing regulations, driving EMBER month safety campaigns, and aligning with our Ministry’s broader transportation safety goals,” Osiyemi noted.

He urged driving school operators to embrace LASDRI’s upgraded curriculum and commit to producing well-trained drivers who meet global benchmarks.

According to iReporter Online, the event also featured notable stakeholders, including Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority, and Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, represented by Mr. Bolaji Oshodi, who presented expert insights on urban mobility and traffic safety.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its pledge to continue fostering a safer, more efficient transport environment for all road users.
