Scandal Rocks Lagos: Obasa To Be Held Accountable For Alleged ₦43.5 Billion Theft
The recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is set to face an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of embezzling ₦43.5 billion..Scandal Rocks Lagos: Obasa To Be Held Accountable For Alleged ₦43.5 Billion Theft
in state funds.
Sources within the EFCC disclosed that Obasa, currently in the United States, will be apprehended upon his return to Nigeria. The allegations stem from claims of excessive spending on luxury vehicles and other questionable expenditures.
In 2020, Obasa was probed for reportedly spending ₦1.1 billion in just one week but was cleared of charges. However, EFCC insiders believe the current case presents irrefutable evidence, leaving little room for Obasa to avoid accountability.
“His political allies, including President Bola Tinubu, seem to have distanced themselves from him,” revealed a source, highlighting Obasa’s dwindling support. His calls to key figures, such as the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, reportedly go unanswered.
Obasa’s impeachment has cast doubt on his political future. While he could attempt to return as a floor member of the House, evading the EFCC probe seems unlikely.
An EFCC spokesperson assured the public that there would be no interference in the investigation, stating, “We are committed to ensuring he clarifies these allegations to our detectives.”
This development signals a critical chapter in the fight against corruption within Nigeria’s political landscape, with the EFCC determined to bring those implicated to justice.
